My Favourite Acupuncture Point: Gallbladder 34 (GB34) – The Influential Point of Tendons and Movement

When treating pain, stiffness or injuries affecting muscles and tendons, one acupuncture point that I return to time and time again is Gallbladder 34 (GB34), also known as Yanglingquan, meaning "Yang Mound Spring."

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), GB34 is known as the Influential Point of the Tendons and Sinews, making it one of the most important points for improving movement, reducing pain and restoring normal function. Whether someone is struggling with a sore shoulder, tight calves, knee pain or chronic lower back discomfort, GB34 often plays a key role in their treatment.

Where is Gallbladder 34?

GB34 is located on the outside of the lower leg, in a small depression just below and slightly in front of the head of the fibula (the smaller of the two lower leg bones), just beneath the knee.

It sits between the fibular head and the muscles of the lateral leg, making it an easily accessible point during treatment.

Why is GB34 so important in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

The Gallbladder meridian travels along the side of the body, passing through the neck, shoulders, ribs, hips and legs. Because of this pathway, GB34 has a profound influence on many common pain conditions affecting these regions.

As the Influential Point of the Tendons, GB34 is traditionally used to nourish and relax muscles, tendons and ligaments throughout the body—not just those near the point itself.

In TCM, GB34 is also valued for its ability to:

- Promote the smooth flow of Liver Qi.

- Relax tendons and muscles.

- Reduce pain and stiffness.

- Clear Damp Heat from the Gallbladder channel.

- Support healthy joint movement.

- Benefit the hips, knees and lower limbs.

- Improve flexibility.

Common actions of GB34

In clinical practice, GB34 is commonly used to:

- Relieve muscular tightness.

- Improve tendon function.

- Reduce inflammation.

- Restore joint mobility.

- Support recovery from sporting injuries.

- Ease nerve-related pain.

- Promote smooth movement throughout the body.

Conditions that may benefit from GB34

Because of its broad actions, GB34 is frequently included in treatment plans for both acute injuries and chronic pain.

Tendon and muscle injuries

GB34 is one of my favourite points when treating:

- Tendinopathy

- Muscle strains

- Ligament injuries

- Tennis elbow

- Golfer's elbow

- Rotator cuff injuries

- Achilles tendinopathy

- Hamstring injuries

- Plantar fasciitis

Joint pain

GB34 is commonly used for:

- Knee pain

- Hip pain

- Shoulder pain

- Neck stiffness

- Lower back pain

- Arthritis

- IT band syndrome

Its influence extends well beyond the knee, making it a valuable point for pain affecting many different joints.

Sciatica and nerve pain

Because of its location and neurological connections, GB34 is often used as part of treatment for:

- Sciatica

- Peroneal nerve irritation

- Lateral leg pain

- Referred pain down the leg

Stress and emotional wellbeing

In TCM, the Gallbladder works closely with the Liver to ensure the smooth movement of Qi throughout the body.

When Qi becomes stagnant, people may experience:

- Muscle tension

- Irritability

- Frustration

- Stress

- Feeling "stuck"

GB34 is frequently combined with other acupuncture points to help reduce physical tension associated with emotional stress.

What happens from a Western medical perspective?

Modern anatomy helps explain why GB34 can have such powerful effects on both pain and movement.

The point lies close to the common fibular (peroneal) nerve as it wraps around the neck of the fibula before dividing into the superficial and deep fibular nerves. These nerves provide both motor and sensory supply to much of the lower leg and foot.

Needling GB34 stimulates sensory nerve fibres, connective tissue and surrounding muscles, sending signals to the spinal cord and brain.

Research suggests this can:

- Trigger the release of endorphins and enkephalins to reduce pain.

- Decrease muscle guarding and excessive muscle tone.

- Improve communication between muscles and the nervous system.

- Increase local blood flow, promoting tissue healing.

- Modulate inflammation through neuroimmune pathways.

- Activate descending pain inhibition pathways within the central nervous system.

Because GB34 lies near important fascial planes and nerve structures, it can have effects that extend far beyond the immediate area, helping improve movement patterns throughout the body.

Why I use GB34 so often

As an acupuncturist, I treat many people with musculoskeletal pain—from office workers with neck tension to athletes recovering from injury.

GB34 is one of the most versatile points available because it helps address both the symptoms and the underlying dysfunction affecting muscles and tendons.

I often include it in treatment plans for shoulder injuries, knee pain, ankle problems, lower back pain and sports injuries because it consistently helps improve mobility while reducing pain and stiffness.

Combined with other carefully selected acupuncture points, it can be a valuable part of restoring normal movement and supporting long-term recovery.

Final thoughts

Gallbladder 34 has earned its reputation as the Influential Point of the Tendons for good reason. Few acupuncture points have such a broad effect on muscles, tendons and movement throughout the body.

Its combination of traditional wisdom and modern scientific understanding makes it one of the points I use most frequently in clinical practice.

Whether you're recovering from an injury, living with chronic pain or simply wanting to move more freely, GB34 is often an important part of helping your body regain balance, reduce pain and restore healthy movement.

If you're wondering whether acupuncture could help with your pain or injury, I'd be happy to discuss an individual treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs.
